Monday, May 19, 2014 – Florida to Troy, Alabama

With final departure preparations having been completed late Sunday afternoon, our goal for this morning was simple: leave the house by 8:00. At 9:00 we achieved that goal. About an hour north on I-95 we were reminded why Florida is known as the “Love Bug” state. As anyone who has ever driven this stretch during May or October knows, the front of our truck and RV were soon covered with these vile, foul smelling paint killers.

At 11:00 we met up with Susan and Richard. The ladies greeted each other with squeals of delight and big embraces like the first day of school after summer break. Richard and I not so much, maintaining proper manly demeanor.

As we continued north we actually found a 3 mile stretch of I-95 that wasn’t under construction (leave it to me to forget to snap a photo) before turning west onto I-10. We turned north in Marianna and soon entered Alabama (state slogan: the “I-65 Around Birmingham will Eat Your Vehicle for Lunch” state) where we soon encountered some of the rudest drivers I’ve ever seen. Approaching Dothan our GPS surprised us with snap call for a left turn. Thirty seven drivers ignored my left turn signal (or mistook it for a mechanical failure), refusing to let us slide into the left lane.

Eventually we arrived in Troy, Alabama where we found a spot as far away from the tractor trailers as possible and settled in for the night.
