Day 11 – Sight Seeing Around Custer

Due to our near catastrophe, we just hung out at the RV park the day we arrived. Oh, and if the RV park in Sioux Falls was the size of a basketball court, this one is a half court. Fewer sites than in Sioux Falls, but everyone is wedged in about as tight as possible. Our neighbors next door could not extend their awning for it would have hit our slideout.

On Wednesday we headed out for some touring. First stop was the town of Hot Springs where we visited a site where mammoth fossils were discovered in the 1970s. This was a fascinating visit and we were able to tour what is still an active archaeological site. Mary Ann took lots of photos (imagine that) that I will add in here later.

Next we headed over to Wind Cave National Park. This is probably the best cave tour I’ve seen and it was very interesting. It’s also very popular and we had to wait about 2 hours for a tour with space available for us. Here again Mary Ann took lots of photos so I’ll let them do the talking once she has processed them.

In the evening we took a short drive up to the Crazy Horse Monument. This is a privately funded work commemorating Crazy Horse, a Lakota Indian warrior. The project was begun 50 years ago and so far they have completed construction of the parking lot.

Actually, Crazy Horse’s head was unveiled in 1998. And his arm is in progress. No, REALLY.

The museum was very interesting and the history of the memorial is also inspiring. We stayed for the laser light show but shouldn’t have.

A visit to the national paint drying museum was on our short list but we ran out of time.

Sounds like a Interesting place to see. Have never been there but have read about Crazy Horse over the years. There are few drawings of him and he never had his picture taken. The monument actually was started in 1948, the year before I was born..I bet it is quite the sight to see..
